For students who have a high ability in, or are motivated by, mathematics, this qualification supports seamless progression to further study, with up-to-date content reflecting the latest thinking in the subject. Students who study further mathematics usually want to continue their studies in mathematics or science at university. However, there are also students who study further mathematics just for the challenge and go on to unrelated courses at university afterwards.
For A Level Further Mathematics, students take two main units plus additional units in mechanics and further pure mathematics. Students who take Further Mathematics find they achieve higher grades in their other A Levels, in particular mathematics. Students also are favoured for places at top universities.
You are required to take the main pure mathematics A Level to take the further mathematics A Level.
