Sociology is the study of society on a number of different levels. It helps explain social change, past, present and future, and encourages political and social engagement with contemporary social issues. It involves being actively involved with social research and policy.
A Level Sociology is very good preparatory course for university, where strong essay writing skills are very important. Universities recognise that A Level Sociology provides students with a very good foundation in social, political and policy knowledge. Sociology is regarded as a demanding and rigorous qualification that combines well with any other combination of subjects. Sociology students go on to a wide range of jobs in policing, research, teaching, medicine, politics and civil service as well as taking jobs in the service sector. Graduates of sociology have higher levels of employment than many other subjects.
In year 1, students study: socialisation, culture and identity, the family, understanding social inequality and research methods.
In year 2, students study: crime and deviance and globalisation and the digital social world.
