Spanish

  • Two-year A Level course
  • AQA 7692
  • 4 units
  • 56 UCAS points at top level

Spanish is the second most widely-spoken language in the world. As such, an A Level in Spanish is looked on highly by employers and is recognised as a “facilitating subject” by Russell Group universities, in helping candidates to secure places in their chosen degree course.

A Level Spanish helps students to develop confident and effective communication skills in Spanish and a thorough understanding of the culture of countries and communities where Spanish is spoken. It develops students’ critical thinking on a wide range of cultural, social and political issues and ignites an interest in, and enthusiasm for language and cultural learning.

Students have a huge array of options open to them if they gain an advanced level qualification in languages. Practically any job can involve languages, whether it is based in the UK or abroad. Some examples of roles that languages can contribute to are: journalist, market researcher, recruitment consultant, management consultant, engineer, lawyer, business analyst, sales executive and much more. Specialist language occupations include interpreter, translator and languages teacher.

The course develops students’ skills in communication, confidence, critical thinking and creativity. The three units explore: Social issues and trends, artistic culture and literary works. Topics include; attitudes to marriage and divorce, the influence of the internet and social media, the rights of women and minority groups, singers and musicians, customs and food as well as architecture and heritage. In year 1, students study and analyse a Spanish film and in year 2, a Spanish novel. Students are required to develop their ability to write and speak in Spanish with accurate grammar and to understand written or spoken Spanish in a variety of contexts. The course is assessed through 3 examinations: Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing, Paper 2: Writing, Paper 3: Speaking.

Spanish can be studied in its own right or as part of various study pathways.  Please click the relevant links below to find out more:
